About D.S. Venetta

Network profileAuthor D.S. Venetta started with a couple of pots on her back patio that were spotted by a neighbor.

“You like to garden?” she asked me.

“I think so,” I replied. “I’m not sure. This is my first time.”

Her eyes lit up and she leaned close. “Would you like to start a garden together?”

I stared at her. “You mean, like a real garden in the ground?”

“Yes!” she exclaimed. “My husband knows everything about gardening–we could have one together!”

Excitement skirted up my spine as I heartily agreed, “Sure! That sounds like fun.”

And my garden was born. However, what started as a shared project with my neighbors soon blossomed into a huge backyard garden of my own.  Not because they didn’t want to continue gardening, mind you, but because their health made it too hard to continue. That’s when my kids stepped in and agreed to help me, and the adventure began!

From bees to worms, insects to wildlife, we soon learned we weren’t alone in the garden, discovering a ton of new facts and cool trivia. Did you know that Mother Nature’s ant repellent is the herb plant peppermint? Who knew? How about taking a sniff of rosemary? It will give you that mental boost you need (like right before you head off to school!).

There are so many things to learn around the garden and once I started, I couldn’t stop. I loved it! Next thing you know, I’m blogging about my adventures over at BloominThyme and creating new and delicious recipes. That’s what you do when faced with a basket full of harvest. You eat it!

Next, I headed to my kids’ school and offered to help start a school garden. Well, wouldn’t you know it became the students’ favorite time of the day. “The garden lady is here! The garden lady is here!”

Gardening is fun. Not only do you get to be outside and play in the dirt, you get to grow stuff and eat it, too. And bugs? They’re just another facet of fun. In fact, I had so much fun gardening with kids that I wanted to share our adventures and wrote them all down on my blog. Now, I’ve put them into a book–in the form of a fiction chapter book. Wild Tales & Garden Thrills is my new series about adventure and hands-on knowledge for everything gardening, beginning with Show Me The Green!

Beans, Green and Grades is next, followed by The Muddy Fingers Grden Crew to the Rescue! (releases September 2017)

But stay-tuned–these books are only the beginning. From here, we’ll cover square-foot gardening, hydroponics/aquaponics, bee keeping, butterflies and so much more!
